Famous Spaceships of Fact and Fantasy
…and how to model them
Part II

The Viper Interceptor - These one-man interceptors are 29 feet long, with three fuel-burning rocket engines that have inner atmospheric flight-and-landing capabilities. They achieve extreme acceleration in space by use of turbo thrusters, and can throw themselves into an immediate reverse direction: a useful ability in battle situations. Twin laser guns are mounted along each side of the Vipers fuselage, just below the cockpit, jutting forward from the wing fronts. The hanger pods of the mother ship Galactica provide complete storage and maintenance facilities for the Vipers. A Viper is shot into space through one of 20 launch tubes lining the outward side of each pod. To re-enter a hanger, the small interceptors approach the rear of a pod and plunge through the landing bay door's gaping mouth - which is also the entrance/exit port for shuttlecrafts.
The Cylon attack ship - Ever appearing to menace our space travellers on their odyssey are the manta ray-like Cylon ships, with rounded wing shapes that curve down at the ends as if to encircle and engulf their pray. These inner/outer atmospheric, twin-engined three-robot ships have twin-mounted laser guns, one on each side of their louvered cockpit shields, and are 35 feet wide by 26 feet long. The Cylon ships harbor themselves aboard their floating headquarters which is shaped like two huge saucers joined, and separated, by a thick central column. The entire configuration spins ominously through space in search of the fleeing humanoids, ever ready to launch its fleet of attack ships against Galactica.

The 2,000-foot Galactica is actually a 6-foot long model equipped with air-cooled quartz-light engines and dozens of tiny, glowing optical fibres that serve as viewports. Its surface is painstakingly detailed with cannibalised model-kit parts. Only one model exists. By means of multiple exposures shot from many different angles, it represents an entire fleet.
The Viper interceptor ships, built in 1:16 scale, are manufactured from a mold that produces six basic components forming one complete ship. Such ease of assembly permits rapid construction when models are needed. No explosion versions exist. Since all detonations are effected optically, models are never lost. Three of the Viper models are specially equipped with nitrogen "engines." Liquid nitrogen is injected into the airflow which passes around hot quartz lights, producing a showy vapor trail to indicate that the turbo thrusters are operating. One Viper model is fitted with landing gear.
Like Vipers, the bat-type Cylon ships are mold-made and feature air-cooled quartz-light engine effects. These models are built in 1:24 scale. Laser-gun effects for both types of ships are achieved optically. A full-size Viper interceptor ship is used in scenes with actors. Because of the greater dimensions of the Cylon ship - a result of upping the crew from one to three robots - only a full-size mock-up of its cockpit area was built.
